TV Stars Speak Up For #SilencedVoices

Some of the cast members of Jane The Virgin, Shameless, Orange Is The New BlackThe Good Place and more are using their social media platforms to remind us about the families who are still separated at the US border. They’re posting videos of themselves with the hashtag #SilencedVoices and they’re reading the words of parents at Port Isabel Detention Center in Texas who are desperately missing their children.

I won’t lie. It’s really hard to watch. The stories are devastating.

Much like the #MyNameIsMirian videos made by Maggie Gyllenhaal and her celebrity friends earlier this year about a Honduran mother who had to hand over her 18-month-old son at the Texas border, these videos are a stark reminder that as we get on with our everyday lives, there are still hundreds of families living through this nightmare.

The words were gathered by attorneys for SupportKIND (Kids In Need of Defense) an organisation founded by Angelina Jolie and the Microsoft Corporation which provides legal aid to refugee and immigrant families and works tirelessly to protect children.

Here they are, as told by Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Azie Tesfai, Anthony Mendez, Jason Dirden, Susan Heyward, Lesley-Ann Brandt and Shanola Hampton:

This is why we are sharing these #SilencedVoices. Thank you @azietesfai for giving this mother’s story a voice, “I came so that my daughter could live. What would you do?” This mother from Honduras was separated from her 6 year old daughter when she finally made it to the U.S. this summer. KIND has been working to help these separated families and continues to fight for their rights in immigration court. Please consider getting involved today by clicking the link in our bio and following #SilencedVoices to hear more of these powerful stories. We must not forget them and we have to make sure this never happens again. • • • #endfamilyseparation #keepfamiliestogether #endfamilydetention #centralamericanrefugees #legalservices #probono

These are the words of a mother, a refugee, speaking about her 6 year old son. * * * She and others like her have help in the people of @supportkind. A group of lawyers and advocates who have dedicated themselves to Kids In Need of Defense are at our country’s southern border, right now, helping children and families who find themselves caught up in bureaucratic chaos and hateful rhetoric. We can support refugees by supporting KIND. I’ve donated and posted this video at the encouragement of @azietefsai, who I met on ‘the job’ but has taught me so much about ‘the work’ we are all here to do. Look up #silencedvoices for more quotes by people being helped by KIND and join us in supporting them.
