Ash Barty Announces Retirement From Tennis to “Chase Other Dreams”

Tennis legend Ash Barty has announced her retirement.

The current World No. 1 and three-time Grand-Slam champion shared her big news on Instagram with the help of fellow tennis star and broadcaster Casey Dellacqua.

“I’m so grateful to everything tennis has given me. It’s given me all of my dreams plus more but I know the time is right now for me to step away and chase other dreams and to put the racquets down,” Ash tells Casey in a 6-minute clip.

She goes on to explain that this something she’s “been thinking about for a long time”, particularly after winning Wimbledon last year and the Australian Open this year:

“Success for me is knowing I’ve given absolutely everything I can. I’m fulfilled. I’m happy.”

As for what “other dreams” she’d like to chase, Ash didn’t quite say. But it sounds like more family-time is on the cards:

“Dreams that don’t necessarily involve travelling the world, being away from my family, being away from my home which is where I’ve always wanted to be.”

She ended by explaining that she is looking forward to discovering more of herself beyond tennis:

“I think it’s important I get to enjoy the next phase of my life as Ash Barty the person not Ash Barty the athlete.”
