It’s a big day for the people of Barbados… and Rihanna!
The Caribbean island which has officially become a republic, has not only sworn in its first ever President, Sandra Mason, but also declared Robyn “Rihanna” Fenty a National Hero!
The superstar, entrepreneur and philanthropist who was born in Barbados was named during the event at Bridgetown by Prime Minister Mia Mottley. She described RiRi as someone who has exemplified “visionary and pioneering leadership” as well as “extraordinary achievement.”
“On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you, the designee for National Hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty. May you continue to shine like a diamond and bring honour to your nation by your works, by your actions,” PM Mottley said, cleverly referencing RiRi’s 2012 hit-single Diamonds.

Rihanna was made a Cultural Ambassador for the country in 2008 and a decade later became the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, a role that’s involved promoting education, tourism and investment in the country.
Over the years, she has been involved in many philanthropic efforts to support the people of Barbados including the funding of an oncology unit in honour of her late grandmother Clara Braithewaite and donating equipment such as tablets to support the education of school students.
