Barbra Streisand is set to receive the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award for 2023!
The Hollywood icon will be celebrated during a ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. on April 22, making her the award’s fourth recipient and the first ever musician to be honoured.
The recipient is chosen by the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation and the award is given to “an extraordinary woman who has exercised a positive and notable influence on society and served as an exemplary role model in both principles and practice.”
And I think we all know, Ms. Streisand is more than extraordinary!
A long-time legend of the entertainment industry, Barbra has received pretty much every prestigious award in recognition of her work including an Emmy, a Grammy, a Tony and an Oscar as well as the U.S. Presidential Medal of Freedom. She’s also a dedicated philanthropist, the founder of the Barbra Streisand Women’s Heart Centre at Cedars-Sinai Hospital and a passionate advocate for voter rights, gender and racial equality and the environment.
“We were honoured to present The Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award to The Queen of England last year, and we are equally ecstatic this year to honour our own queen of music and film, Barbra Streisand – an unrivalled American cultural icon who has brought her own brand of magic to the entire world,” Foundation Chairman and award creator, Julie Opperman says.
“I made a promise to Justice Ginsburg to help preserve her legacy and to ensure that this award that bears her name continues to recognise strong women leaders who have made the world a better place, and I only wish she was here today to celebrate Ms. Streisand with us.”
In a short statement on Twitter, Barbra shared her excitement with her followers:
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award named after one of the iconic and pathbreaking Justices ever to serve on the Supreme Court.”
Fun fact: according to the Washington Post, the late Justice Ginsburg was a Streisand fan!
