Kim Petras Becomes First Transgender Woman to Win GRAMMY For Best Pop Duo/Group

Kim Petras has made GRAMMYs history…

During the 65th annual awards, Kim and Sam Smith were named Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song ‘Unholy’, making Kim the first transgender woman to win it!

Receiving thunderous applause and a standing ovation from the audience, Kim used her moment in the spotlight to thank all the “incredible transgender legends” who came before her, “who kicked these doors open for me so I could be here tonight.”

She specifically thanked her late friend:

“Sophie, my friend who passed away two years ago. Who told me this would happen and always believed in me. Thank you so much for your inspiration, Sophie. I adore you and your inspiration will forever be in my music.”

Kim also gave a shoutout to Madonna “for fighting for LGBTQ rights”, her mother, who she says “believed me that I was a girl” and finally her collaborator and friend Sam Smith: “a true angel and hero in my life.”
