Martha Stewart to Receive 2024 Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award

Martha Stewart is set to receive the Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Woman of Leadership Award for 2024!

The entrepreneur and media titan will be celebrated during a ceremony at the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. on April 13, making her the fifth recipient of the prestigious honour.

“Like Justice Ginsburg, I believe in limitless opportunity and parity for everyone,” Martha said in a statement. “I have always been inspired by her tenacious spirit, work ethic, and her personal commitment to justice. I am so honoured to be recognised with this award in her name.”

Previous recipients include music legend Barbra Streisand, fashion icon Diane von Furstenberg, justice reform advocate Agnes Gund and the late Queen Elizabeth II.

The recipient is chosen by the Dwight D. Opperman Foundation and the award is given to “an extraordinary woman who has exercised a positive and notable influence on society and served as an exemplary role model in both principles and practice.”

According to the foundation, Martha was on the late Justice Ginsburg’s original wish list of potential honourees!

“Justice Ginsburg became an icon by bravely pursuing her own path and prevailing against the odds,” Brendan V. Sullivan Jr., chair of the RBG Awards said. “The honourees reflect the integrity and achievement that defined Justice Ginsburg’s career and legend.”

For the first time this year, the awards were, rather surprisingly, expanded to include men who’ve demonstrated notable accomplishments too. Among them is Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone who is being recognised for his contributions to culture.

“I am sincerely honoured to be the RBG Award’s first Cultural Icon recipient,” the actor said. “At the end of the day, it is truly humbling to know that when you completely empty yourself for your art, it is not only well received but transformational for so many people all over the world.”

UPDATE: The late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s family has released a statement after the recipients of the 2024 awards were announced. The prize, which has only ever honoured notable women, included men this year with the additional recipients including Elon Musk and Rupert Murdoch. Part of the family’s statement reads:

“The decision of the Opperman Foundation to bestow the RBG Women’s Leadership Award on this year’s slate of awardees is an affront to the memory of our mother and grandmother, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.” (As reported by Mother Jones Magazine which also confirmed the family would like the Opperman Foundation to restore the original purpose of the award or remove Ginsburg’s name.)
