Taylor Swift is making a little history….
The superstar has been named the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade at the Nashville Songwriter Awards – making her the first woman to receive the honour!
“The way I see it, this is an award that celebrates a culmination of moments. Challenges. Gauntlets laid down. Albums I’m proud of. Triumphs. Strokes of luck or misfortune. Loud, embarrassing errors and the subsequent recovery from those mistakes, and the lessons learned from all of it,” Taylor said in her acceptance speech.
“This awards celebrates my family and my co-writers and my team. My friends and mu fiercest fans and harshest detractors and everyone who entered my life or left it. Because when it comes to my songwriting and my life, they are one in the same.”
She also hilariously pointed out that she has a special way of categorising her songs: “I’ve never talked about this publicly before, because, well, it’s dorky. But I also have, in my mind, established genre categories for lyrics I write. Three of them, to be exact. They are affectionately titled Quill Lyrics, Fountain Pen Lyrics and Glitter Gel Pen Lyrics.”
“Writing songs is my life’s work,” Taylor continues, “and my hobby and my never-ending thrill.”
According to the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI), the Decade honouree is “determined by their cumulative songwriting success between the designated years (2010 to 2019)” as well as each song’s performance on a week to week basis in the top charts. Previous winners of the category are Vince Gill (for the 90s) and Toby Keith (for the 2000s).
But back to Taylor – this latest honour adds to her already long, long list of NSAI achievements including being named Songwriter-Artist of the Year a record-breaking seven times.
“A good songwriter can have you see the flowers in a song,” fellow superstar Keith Urban shared in a statement. “A great songwriter can have you see and feel them. But a truly gifted songwriter’s songwriter will have you see, feel and smell those roses in the window. That’s Taylor.”
Taylor is also an 11-time Grammy winner and the only female artist in history to win Album of the Year three times. She’s also the most awarded artist ever in American Music Awards’ history, Billboard’s first-ever and only two-time winner of the Woman of the Decade Award, the only solo artist this century to have three albums reach No.1 in one year and much, much more.
