Usher Honours the Women in his Life While Receiving NAACP President’s Award

Usher has received the President’s Award at the 55th annual NAACP Image Awards – and he used his moment in the spotlight to thank the women in his life.

On Saturday, the superstar was presented with the honour by NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson. which recognises “special achievement and distinguished public service” and in particular, recognised Usher’s service through his New Look Foundation which supports youth.

Taking to the stage, Usher, who was raised by a single mother, expressed his gratitude for the women who made him who he is today:

“They say behind or beside or with every strong man is a stronger woman, and for that I thank my mother and my beautiful wife Jennifer for holding me down.”

He spoke about his mother’s unwavering dedication to uplifting him and his dreams too: “Mom… I want you to realise, you know, how much I love, recognise, honour and appreciate you.”

In a statement ahead of the ceremony, NAACP’s Johnson said, “we are honoured to present this year’s President’s Award to Usher for his unparalleled talent and remarkable contributions as an artists and advocate for our community. Beyond his voal talent and stage presence, Usher has empowered thousands of under-resourced youth to pursue their dreams through collee readiness programs, financial literacy, and career planning. His dedication to creating positive change in the world has touched countless lives, redefining the boundaries of creativity and compassion.”

Previous winners of the prestigious President’s Award including Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, LeBron James and Rihanna.

And that wasn’t the only award Usher won at the event. He was also named Entertainer of the Year, beating Colman Domingo, Fantasia Barrino, Halle Bailey and Keke Palmer for the honour.

During his speech he reflected on his epic year including performing at the Super Bowl halftime show and marrying his now wife, Jennifer Goicoechea.

Prior to the ceremony, Usher also picked up the awards for Outstanding Male Artist and Outstanding Soul/R&B Song for “Good Good” featuring Summer Walker and 21 Savage.
