Pamela Anderson has penned an open letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urging him to take meat and dairy off the menu in prisons across the country.
The actress who is also an honorary director of animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) says that serving nutritious vegan meals in correctional facilities would not only reduce costs but also improve lives and help the planet.
“Other prison systems have seen the benefits of serving inmates meat-free meals,” Pamela writes. “The Maricopa County Jail in Arizona, for example, reported that it reduced costs by $273,000 when it switched to all-vegetarian food for its 8,000 inmates.”
“Canada has the potential to cut costs even more if we switch to vegan meals for the roughly 40,000 people currently held in correctional facilities” she continues.
So what would Pamela like to see on the menu instead?
“Beans, rice, lentils, pasta, potatoes and other vegetables as well as fruits supply all the nutrients that anyone needs but at a fraction of the cost of meats and cheese.”

The actress also puts forward the point that a switch to vegan or vegetarian meals would mean saving on freezer costs, improving the health of inmates and reducing their healthcare costs and helping the planet all at once.
“My friends at PETA and I would be happy to work with your team to create a low-cost meal plan for your correctional facilities,” she ends the letter.
What do you think? Is Pamela Anderson onto something here?
