Sam Neill Reveals His Upcoming Memoir is About “Gratitude Looking Back on This Life”

Sam Neill’s memoir Did I Ever Tell You This? is hitting shelves this week and the beloved actor is sharing some details about what we can expect.

In a post on Instagram, the Jurassic Park star revealed that he wrote the book in the space of a few months while he was undergoing treatment for cancer, because he “needed something to do.”

“And I am used to going to work and I suddenly couldn’t go to work. So that’s why I wrote the book, and I have to say there’s been great response to it. People seem to love it, which is great. I was very nervous, obviously, as a first time author.”

He adds that the book is separated into fun topics including “Movies, Life, Love and Other Catastrophes” and that the tone of his writing is one of “surprise”.

“I never thought that I would have a career as an actor, let alone an actor on screen. But that’s kind of what happened and I am full of gratitude looking back on this life, and that’s what the book is about.”

According to The Text Publishing Company, the memoir will also cover Sam’s early days in Northern Ireland where he was born, New Zealand where he emigrated as a child, how he discovered his love of acting while at boarding school and his later endeavours in Central Otago where he established his own vineyard.

Sam, who shares in the book that he was diagnosed with blood cancer but has been in remission for eight months, assured fans that despite the  “Cancer! Cancer! Cancer!” headlines from certain publications, he is “alive and kicking” and generally doing well.

“Let’s not worry too much about ‘all that’ because I’m fine. Okay!”

He’s also about to embark on his next project, the TV adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s Apples Never Fall with Annette Bening, Georgia Flood, Essie Randles and Conor Merrigan Turner.

“I’m very happy to be going back to work. We start filming in seven days time.”

Did I Ever Tell You This? by Sam Neill will be released March 21. You can pre-order your copy through your local independent bookstore or get it below:
