Shang-Chi star Simu Liu has written a memoir!
The actor took to Instagram on the first day of the Lunar New Year to share the cover of his book, titled “We Were Dreamers: An Immigrant Superhero Origin Story.”
He describes it as a “deeply personal journey that has been nearly three years in the making” which covers his journey from Harbin, China to Canada where he went on to become an accountant, a stock photo model and a Hollywood star! (Ahem, not just a Hollywood star FYI but also the very first Marvel Asian superhero!)
“I’m finally ready to share with you this hilarious and heartfelt story of coming of age in a foreign land of poutine and Tim Horton’s double-doubles, struggling to find your footing, then ultimately learning to seize the moment and own your greatness,” he adds.

“This is the story of our family of dreamers who never stopped reaching for their happy ending. I know that you’re going to LOVE it.”
According to a description from the publisher, the book explores Simu’s childhood where he was left in the care of his grandparents until he was 4, his struggles with his own family once they were reunited as will as his “battles with cultural stereotypes and his own identity.”
In a press release from publisher William Morrow, Simu says, “this is the story I want to tell – a story about our little family of three that crossed the ocean from China to North America in the relentless pursuit of a better life. A story about the obstacles that nearly tore us apart, whether it was a clash of cultures, a gap of generations or simply our own stubbornness. A story about an imperfect family that made mistakes, often hurt one another and nearly imploded on many occasions, but held on, survived and even thrived.”
The book features contributions from fellow stars Olivia Munn, Ryan Reynolds and Ronny Chieng.
It’s due out on May 3 but you can pre-order it HERE.
