Soccer superstar and long-time UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador David Beckham has announced he’s launching an emergency appeal to support children impacted by conflict in Ukraine.

In a post on Instagram, Beckham explained to his 71.3 million followers that the money raised through his “7 Fund” would go to UNICEF to help provide immediate aid, support children’s wellbeing and create safe spaces for families.

“As the conflict in Ukraine enters its second week, the needs of families are escalating and 7.5 m children are now at risk,” he writes.

“Like you, I have watched the situation in Ukraine unfold with horror and disbelief. Mothers forced to flee with their children. Families torn apart. Children pulled from their beds to become refugees overnight,” Beckham shares in an accompanying video:

“I know how experienced UNICEF is in deploying aid in conflict situations. They have people on the frontlines as refugees pour over borders to be given shelter in neighbouring countries.”

According to the humanitarian organisation, the funds raised will be specifically used to provide:

  • UNICEF ‘Blue Dot’ child-friendly safe spaces along transit routes to provide critical services and support to displaced kids and families,
  • first aid kits for health workers,
  • blankets, warm clothes, emergency water and hygiene kits,
  • school supplies so kids can continue their learning; and
  • mobile child protection teams who’ll provide psychosocial care to children traumatised by chronic insecurity, respond to cases of violence and abuse against children and assist those who’ve been separated from family.

Beckham also revealed that he and Victoria, have made a donation of an undisclosed amount on behalf of their family to kickstart the appeal.
