Halyna Hutchins’ Family Shares Statement Following Verdict

The family of Halyna Hutchins, a cinematographer who was shot and killed on the set of Rust, has shared a statement after the film’s armorer was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter.

Responding to the verdict, Halyna’s parents Olga Solovey and Anatolli Andosovych, along with her sister Svetlana Zemko said through their lawyers:

“Today was the first trial and conviction in the criminal justice process. We are satisfied that the jury, based on the evidence, found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty beyond a reasonable doubt for her part in the taking of Halyna’s life. We look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for Halyna’s death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions.”

26-year-old Gutierrez-Reed was found liable after less than three hours of deliberations by jurors at the First Judicial District Courthouse in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She was acquitted of a separate charge which accused her of tampering with evidence.

As reported by ABC News, prosecutor Kari Morrissey argued that “the astonishing lack of diligence with regard to gun safety is without a question a significant cause of the death of Halyna Hutchins” whilst Defence attorney Jason Bowles said his client was a “convenient fall person” as the investigations carried out by authorities following the 2021 shooting weren’t sufficient.

Rust director Joel Souza was also injured in the incident which took place during rehearsals.

Gutierrez-Reed now faces up to 19 months in prison. No sentencing date has been set just yet. Meanwhile, Alec Baldwin, the lead actor and co-producer of Rust who pointed the gun during rehearsals, will face trial later this year. He has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter.

In the aftermath of Halyna’s death, her friends and colleagues set up a scholarship at the American Film Institute, where Halyna studied, to support other aspiring female cinematographers.
