Well that was quick! It was literally just a couple of weeks ago Sophie Perry, the teenage daughter of late actor Luke Perry, decided to make the most of suddenly being thrust into the spotlight, posting a crowd-funding campaign on Instagram to build 10 new preschools in rural parts of Malawi.
Today, the 18-year-old announced that the first school has been built – and it’s been named after her dad!
In a social media post, Sophie says, “I can’t tell you how proud and excited I am to see it open on Wednesday. Thank you to my amazing partner Ruben for everything. Especially for fighting to name the school after my dad.”
Sophie (along with a few friends) are working on building 9 more preschools in the Thyolo district of Malawi. They will arrange for teacher training workshops so the schools will be staffed by qualified educators and they’ll build 15 gardens, playgrounds and toilets with hand-washing facilities.
We reckon Luke would be pretty proud.
