Beyoncé’s Iconic ‘Black is King’ Bodysuit Will Be Auctioned To Raise Funds For Make-A-Wish

Beyoncé’s iconic bodysuit from the movie Black is King (you know the one!) is going under the hammer, and it’s all for a good cause!

Part of Disney’s Create 100 auction, the outfit will raise funds for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Fans can bid on this piece of fashion history as well as dozens of other items connected to Disney, Pixar, Marvel and the Star Wars franchise in collaboration with creatives around the world including Tommy Hilfiger, Pandora, Christian Louboutin, Sabyasachi Mukherjee and more, from October 12 until October 30.

According to a release from Disney, the company will kick off the fundraiser by donating $1 million to Make-A-Wish to support the granting of life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses.

Disney and Make-A-Wish have been collaborating for more than 40 years and together, have helped 150,000 children worldwide. In fact, Disney is the top “wish granter” for the foundation, donating shopping sprees, studio visits, theme park and resort holidays, meet-and-greets and more.

Beyoncé’s Black is King was released in 2020, a visual album serving as a companion to the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift, which has been hailed as a celebration of both black culture and fashion. Among the standout outfits was the Marine Serre moon print bodysuit worn by Beyoncé and her dancers in the video for “Already”.

Zerina Akers, the stylist behind Black is King, shares in a statement to Vogue why she chose the bodysuit:

“At the time, the brand had not yet commercialised the brown colourway. I wanted a second skin, a brown skin – brown bodies and an even playing field where Beyoncé wears the same thing as her dancers and are unified.”
