Anne Hathaway Reflects on Experiencing Pregnancy Loss

Anne Hathaway has opened up about experiencing pregnancy loss.

During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actor was asked about a moving post she shared on Instagram back in 2019 where she announced she was pregnant but also let her followers know that “it was not a straight line to either of (her) pregnancies”.

Anne explained that her post was very much about letting others experiencing “infertility and conception hell” know that they’re not alone.

“Given the pain I felt while trying to get pregnant, it would’ve felt disingenuous to post something all the way happy when I know this story is much more nuanced than that for everyone,” she said of her post.

“So when it did go well for me, having been on the other side of it – where you have to have the grace to be happy for someone – I wanted to let my sisters know, ‘You don’t have to always be graceful. I see you and I’ve been you.’ It’s really hard to want something so much and to wonder if you’re doing something wrong.”

Elaborating on her experience, she tells the publication that her pregnancy loss happened in 2015  – while playing a pregnant character on the off-Broadway production, Grounded.

“I was doing a play and I had to give birth on stage every night. It was too much to keep it in when I was onstage pretending everything was fine.”

She eventually told her friends and was surprised by how many of them had also experienced pregnancy loss too.

“I thought, where is this information? Why are we feeling so unnecessarily isolated?”

Anne added that what really hit her the hardest was that for many years after her post, other women would come up to her to share their pain.

“Almost daily, a woman came up to me in tears and I would just hold her because she was carrying this around and suddenly it wasn’t all hers anymore.”

During her interview, Anne also spoke of the aftermath of her 2012 Academy Award win for Lés Miserables, the online scrutiny and negativity she experienced online and how that impacted her career, how her Interstellar director, Christopher Nolan, kept her going and how she ultimately embraced her true self.
