Olivier Rousteing is opening up for the first time about an explosion in his home last year which left him with burns on the upper half of his body and face.
The 36-year-old Balmain designer, who first told reporters he’d been in an accident after celebrating his 10th anniversary as creative director at the luxury fashion house last month, shared an image of himself on his Instagram today, all bandaged up:

“A YEAR AGO,” he captioned the image. “I finally feel ready to share this.”
Olivier goes on to explain how a fireplace exploded in his home and he woke up the next morning in Paris’ Hôpital Saint Louis.
“The talented staff at that famous hospital, which was dealing with an incredible number of COVID cases at that same time, took amazing care of me,” he continues, thanking them for keeping his “secret.”
He says he “did everything to hide this story from as many people as possible” and isn’t really sure why he felt “so ashamed.”
“As I recovered, I worked days and night to forget,” he explains, hiding his scars with “face masks, turtlenecks, long sleeves and even multiple rings” on his fingers.
“Now, a year later – healed, happy and healthy.”
Olivier says the experience has helped him realise how blessed he truly is.
“My last show was about the celebration of healing over pain and I thank all the models, the productions, my team, my Balmain family, my friends that came and supported not only my 10 years of Balmain but my rebirth. Today, I feel so free, so good and lucky. I’m beginning a new chapter with a smile on my face and a heart full of gratitude.”
He ends his message urging his seven million followers to never give up: “There is always the sun after the storm.”
His post was flooded with messages of love and support from thousands of people including Kim Kardashian who posted a praying hand emoji and the words, “I love you.”
