Daddy Yankee declares war on cancer

I recently read that the “Despacito” video clip has had more views on YouTube than any other video, ever. It’s currently on 3.3 billion views! (Pretty sure my kids and I are responsible for at least a billion of those clicks.) When something is so popular, whether it’s a song or a movie or a TV show, I often go searching to see if the stars involved are using this moment, this high point of fame, to do something kind for the world. Almost always, the answer is yes.

And Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez, better known as Daddy Yankee – the rapper featured in the song – is no exception.

Just weeks after stopping by a kids hospital in Madrid and doing an AWESOME “Despacito” duet with cancer patient Andrea, (see video above – he didn’t have to do much because she absolutely nailed it without him!), the Puerto Rican superstar is using his influence to help find a cure for breast cancer.

In fact, he says he’s in “war mode” with the disease and is asking his 30 million Facebook fans and 17 million Instagram followers to join the fight by supporting #TeamYankee in an upcoming Race for the Cure event in his home country.

5 women are being diagnosed with breast cancer every day in Puerto Rico.

42 women, every single day, in Australia.

No matter where you are in the world, that’s just too many.

And for Daddy Yankee, who is idolised by so many boys and young men, the message is simple – no one wants to lose a loved one to breast cancer. “We all have a friend, sister, aunt, grandmother or mother who has battled breast cancer,” he says in a recent insta post.

The event on October 8 is all about raising funds to find a cure as well as support patients in Puerto Rico.

“I call on all citizens, families and businesses to register, run or walk, together to provide support and financial assistance to patients in treatment. We will form the largest team in the history of this event. Sign up under Team Yankee! And together with the survivors we tell  the cancer: I’m going against you!”
