Taraji P. Henson, Jazmine Sullivan and more stars are using their platforms at the 2022 BET Awards to highlight the importance of reproductive rights.
During Taraji’s opening monologue, the actress and awards show host began by thanking Lizzo for donating $1 million (with Live Nation) to nonprofits including Planned Parenthood in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade. She then shared some words about the case which has meant states now have the power to ban abortions:
“It’s about time we step into our power. It’s about time we talk about the fact that guns have more rights than a woman,” she said on stage.
“It’s a sad day in America… A weapon that can take lives has more power than a woman who can give life IF she chooses to. It’s about time I got that off my chest.”
Not long after, “Pick Up Your Feelings” singer Jazmine Sullivan who won Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, also shared some words about the case during her acceptance speech:
“I wanna speak directly to the men. We need y’all. We need y’all to stand up for us, stand up with us. If you’ve ever benefited from a woman making one of the toughest decisions of her life, which is to terminate a pregnancy, you need to be standing with us. This is not just a woman’s issue. This is everybody’s issue and we need your support more than ever. Okay fellas? Cuz we got y’all.”
Janelle Monáe shared a simple “F*** the Supreme Court” when she took to the stage to present an award, receiving wild cheers from the audience.
