Angelina Jolie is using her platform to speak up for civilians caught up in war.
The Hollywood star and UNHCR Special Envoy has taken to Instagram to post excerpts from the Geneva Conventions, a series of treaties and international agreements agreed upon in 1949, that set out the humanitarian standards all parties must abide by during conflict.
“Over the past 60 years, civilians have been the main victims of war. Thousands of civilians have been killed. Others don’t have food, water, heat or shelter. Millions have been forced to flee their homes. Both soldiers and civilians are protected under the Geneva Conventions. An attempt to limit the damage done by war and reduce suffering,” Angelina begins her message.
She goes on to explain the basic rules of war which “all sides in conflicts have to follow.”
They include: “civilians can never be targeted”, “medics and aid workers should be protected” and “prisoners deserve fair treatment. They must not be tortured or abused.”
Angelina ends her message with the powerful reminder: “BREAKING THESE RULES IS A WAR CRIME.”
