The Weeknd Donates $1 Million to Help Feed Millions of Ethiopians in Crisis

The Weeknd has made a US$1,000,000 donation to the United Nations World Food Program to help secure 2 million meals for people in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.

In a post on Instagram, the Canadian superstar who has Ethiopian heritage, drew attention to the ongoing conflict and urged his 30 million fans to consider helping too:

“My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction,” he says.

The conflict has been developing for months since the federal government clashed with leaders in Tigray over electoral rules (and various other disputes), with thousands of lives lost amid the bombings and gunfire and a full-scale humanitarian crisis unfolding. The United Nations has also warned that thousands of people risk starvation which is why The Weeknd’s donation is so important.
