The Weeknd Named Goodwill Ambassador for the U.N. World Food Programme

Multi-platinum and Diamond-certified superstar Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye has a major new gig!

He’s been named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and will use his platform to advocate for ending global hunger.

“The U.N. World Food Programme is doing urgent and important work to change and save lives on a daily basis and I feel passionately about addressing world hunger and helping people in need. Our partnership is an authentic extension of all our efforts and intentions to help those in need and bring an end to so much suffering,” he said in a press statement.

He’s been a major supporter of the programme already, you see. Earlier this year The Weeknd, who is the son of Ethiopian immigrants to Canada, donated $1 million to the humanitarian organisation to assist with their relief efforts in Ethiopia and deliver 2 million meals to communities impacted by ongoing conflict.

And the WFP are thrilled to have him on board:

“His compassion and commitment to helping the world’s hungriest people is truly inspirational,” Executive Director of the WFP David Beasley said.

“Every night, 811 million people go to bed hungry, and another 270 million are marching toward starvation. This is just not right and we have got to speak out and act today to save lives.”

And that’s exactly what The Weeknd will be doing – his role will be to raise awareness about global hunger and ways to combat it as well as share how the WFP is providing lifesaving food assistance to over 100 million people in more than 80 countries.

“Whether he is performing or speaking out about global hunger, The Weeknd’s voice is powerful and inspiring, only matched by his dedication to helping people around the globe,” World Food Program USA President Barron Segar shared in a statement.

“We are honoured that he has joined our mission. He will undoubtedly inspire the next generation of humanitarians in the fight to ensure no man, woman or child goes to bed hungry.”
