Camila and Matthew McConaughey are hoping to provide ongoing support to the community in Uvalde, Texas following last week’s horrific school shooting.
The Hollywood couple has announced the launch of a Uvalde Relief Fund days after meeting with families from Robb Elementary School where 21 people were killed, including 19 children.
“Matthew and Camila McConaughey have been on the ground in Uvalde for the last few days since the mass shooting, the loss is tragic,” a statement from the couple’s Just Keep Livin’ Foundation reads.
“While the spirit of the community is in pain, the unanimous support of families to families and strangers to locals is beautiful. After the initial shock, the town has now begun the funerals and the grieving process, which will continue for the surviving children, families and the entire community. The community will need ongoing grief counselling and support on the long road ahead of them. Please join us to help the people of Uvalde, TX.”
The relief fund will not only cover counselling costs but also “costs associated with burial services and other immediate and long-term needs of the community.”
Matthew, who was born in Uvalde and spent much of his childhood there, shared a statement in the aftermath of the shooting calling on all Americans, regardless of their political persuasions, to find “common ground” on gun laws:
“The true call to action now is every American to take a longer and deeper look in the mirror, and ask ourselves ‘What is it that we truly value? How do we repair the problem? What small sacrifices can we individually take today, to preserve a healthier and safer nation, state and neighbourhood tomorrow?’ We cannot exhale once again, make excuses and accept these tragic realities as the status quo.”
