Social media can be a powerful tool for good when it’s used with intention and purpose. From highlighting the best of humanity to creating change and inspiring others to do some good too – and there’s no one who does this better than fans of Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan, or the Sussex Squad as they’re endearingly called.
The hunger relief charity which distributes meals to millions of people around the world impacted by natural disasters, poverty and war has been a partner of Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation since 2020. Together, they’re building four community relief centres and emergency response kitchens in various parts of the world including Dominica, Puerto Rico and Mumbai, India.
The Sussex Squad started the month-long fundraiser on May 6, marking Archie’s 3rd birthday, and are continuing throughout June to mark Lili’s 1st birthday (which just passed on June 4).
And why are they doing all this you might be wondering? Why are hundreds of people from around the world tied together by a love and admiration for Harry and Meghan, giving out of their own pockets?
Because that’s just what the Sussex Squad does!
Inspired by Meghan and Harry’s own countless acts of kindness – from supporting World Central Kitchen, to speaking out for paid parental leave, helping mothers experiencing homelessness, providing grants to organisations improving the online space or boosting gender equity, just to name a few – they are constantly looking for ways to give back too.
“We can’t think of a better gift to honour Archie and Lili, the Sussex family’s youngest cupcake, bread, and waffle-loving foodies,” a message from the Sussex Squad reads on their fundraising page.
They’ve held virtual baby shower fundraisers in the couple’s name, they’ve donated to girls’ education groups to mark Harry and Meghan’s birthdays and now they’re honouring Archie and Lili too.
And their kindness has not gone unnoticed. Royal reporter Omid Scobie posted on Twitter that a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan confirmed the couple “remain incredibly touched by the countless birthday wishes” and are “amazed” to learn that Sussex supporters around the world have made over $100,000 in donations to World Central Kitchen.
As with all fandoms, there can be negativity too but there’s no denying…
Kindness and compassion clearly has a ripple effect. If only we always used social media to raise funds for good causes like the Sussex Squad do.
