Gina, Sofia, Eva (and more) Call For Equal Pay For Latinas

Moeloco Flip Flop

It’s #LatinaEqualPay day in the US and there are some big (Latina) names raising awareness about the wage injustice so many of their sisters are facing every day.

Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara is one of them who posted on social media,“there’s still so much work for latinas to do to be treated equally.” And she’s right – Latina workers on average earn 53 cents for every $1 a non-hispanic man is paid. For the same job. That’s almost half the pay! HALF THE PAY.

Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez points out something even crazier:“the gap has widened since last year” when it was 54 cents for every dollar! And just to get some context here too, the figures are 79 cents on average for white women and 63 cents for black women. What it means is that Latina women would somehow have to work an extra 305 days a year to catch up to their male counterparts.

Orange Is The New Black star Diane Guerrero points out how ridiculously unfair this is: “Latinas work just as hard as white male workers. Our work is also just as valuable. We should be paid just as much as white men are paid.”

Check out the celebs below raising awareness about the issue. They all happen to be wearing “Phenomenally Latina” t-shirts with proceeds going to the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health.
