MacKenzie Scott Donates $133.5M to Nonprofit Supporting School Kids

A nonprofit working to ensure children across America can go to school and have the tools to succeed no matter their situation or background, has revealed they’ve received a mega generous donation from MacKenzie Scott.

The novelist and philanthropist has pledged $133.5 million – yes million – to Communities in Schools who can now broaden their work in breaking down systemic barriers that stand in the way of a child’s opportunity and success.

“Today is an important day for students who are underserved, under-resourced and in need of transformative support to build a brighter future,” said Ray Saldaña, President and CEO of the nonprofit.

“This unrestricted gift allows us to combat the inequities in public education and reimagine the way schools operate and show up for all students.”

The organisation is currently operating in 3,000 schools but over the next five years, they’re hoping to reach 70,000 schools so MacKenzie’s donation? Yeah, it’s a big help.

And they won’t just be helping kids in school – their reach goes far beyond, working with local service providers so that issues like food, housing, healthcare, counselling can also be addressed.

MacKenzie, who is a signatory to the Giving Pledge – committing to giving at least half of her wealth to charity – announced on Medium last month that she would no longer be sharing the details of any donations she makes and will leave it up to the organisations themselves to disclose this info if they so choose.

This latest donation follows a $10 million gift she made to Public Allies, a leadership development program for youth.
