Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit building safe, affordable homes for families in need around the world has revealed they’ve received an enormous donation from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.
According to the organisation, MacKenzie has gifted them US$436 million, to be distributed amongst their international branch and 84 affiliates across America.
“This incredibly generous gift will allow us to dramatically increase capacity and implement programs that will have multi-generational impact on communities around the U.S and our global mission for many years to come,” CEO Jonathan Reckford said in a statement – he represents Habitat International which is receiving $25 million.
Habitat for Humanity is currently operating in more than 70 countries including Australia where teams of volunteers have helped build or renovate homes for low income families, women and children escaping violence and those affected by natural disasters.
MacKenzie, who is a signatory to the Giving Pledge – committing to giving at least half of her wealth to charity – announced on Medium earlier this year that she would no longer be sharing the details of any donations she makes and will leave it up to the organisations themselves to disclose this info if they so choose.
This latest donation follows a $10 million gift she made to Public Allies, a leadership development program for youth and a $133.5 million gift to to Communities in Schools who work to break down systemic barriers that stand in the way of a child’s education and success.
