Mackenzie Scott Donates $640 Million to Hundreds of US Nonprofits

Author and philanthropist Mackenzie Scott is giving US$640 million to hundreds of nonprofits across America that responded to an “open call” for applications.

According to Mackenzie’s organisation, Yield Giving, more than 6,000 nonprofits applied for the funding. Mackenzie had planned to help out 250 community-led organisations with awards of $1 million each but ended up giving various amounts to 361 organisations instead!

“In light of the incredible work these organisations, as judged by their peers and external panelists, the donor team decided to expand the awardee pool and the award amount,” a statement from Lever for Change (who managed the open call) reads on their website.

“This cohort of 361 outstanding teams from 38 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico will enable individuals and families to achieve substantive improvement in their well-being through foundational resources. These community-led, community-focused organisations work in urban and rural settings, with individuals of all ages, focusing on a wide range of issues. Yet, they share a common sense of purpose: the Open Call awardees are all making positive change in their communities by reducing disparities in economic outcomes, education, health, and other critical issues.”

Some of the awardees include The Neighbour Project which helps underserved communities escape debt, save money and purchase homes, the Immigration Project which provides immigrants with legal services,  California Native Vote Project which supports Native American communities engage in voting and the Prison Entrepreneurship Program which supports prison rehabilitation programs. The awardees also include youth, sports, gender equality and mental health programs, LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, and centres working to end gender-based violence.
