Meghan Marks 40th Birthday With “40 Minutes of Mentorship” Initiative to Support Women

Meghan, The Duchess of Sussex is celebrating her 40th trip around the sun and she’s marking the special occasion with an initiative aimed at supporting women impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a playful video message shared on her Archewell foundation’s website – and with a little help from her famous pal, Melissa McCarthy – the birthday girl imagines the ripple effect of lifting up another woman in need:

“Here’s the idea. Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who’s mobilising back into the workforce,” she explains after shooting down Melissa’s idea of getting matching tattoos, having a Suits reunion or throwing a yacht party instead.

“Over two million women in the US alone and tens of millions around the world have lost their jobs due to COVID,” Meghan continues.

“And I think if we all do it. And we all commit 40 minutes to some sort of active service, we create a ripple effect. You in?”

But her question isn’t just for Melissa. Or for those who’ve already agreed to take part (journalist Katie Couric, actress and humanitarian Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Spanx entrepreneur Sara Blakely and fashion designer Misha Nonoo just to name a few). It’s for all of us to consider giving 40 minutes of our time to help someone else.

“Time is among our greatest and most essential gifts,” a message from Meghan reads on the Archewell page.

“Time with our loved ones, time doing the things we love, time spent learning, laughing, growing, and the sacred time we have on this earth. Amongst the most valuable gifts of time is also time spent in service to others knowing that it can contribute to incredible change.”

The message also links to 12 organisations supporting women which we can all contribute to, including supermodel Christy Turlington’s charity Every Mother Counts which works to ensure better maternal health for women all over the world and Smart Works UK which accepts donations of work attire to help women feel more confident and succeed in their job interviews.
