Met Gala: The Fundraiser Everyone’s Talking About

J-Lo is dripping in diamonds. Kim Kardashian is dripping wet. Ezra Miller has seven eyes. Katy Perry is a chandelier. And Jared Leto is carrying his own replica head around.

Ah yes, the Met gala is on again. And while for most of us, it’s all about the wonderfully outrageous fashion, let’s not forget it’s also about raising money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute.

This is the place where more than 33 thousand costumes and accessories from all over the world are immaculately kept, some of the items dating back to the 15th century!

This year, tickets to the Met gala are approximately AU $42 thousand each. (Yep, you not only have to be invited to the gala by chairwoman and US Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, you also have to pay some big bucks!) And with over 500 guests attending, the event is expected to raise at least $20 million.

The gala is the main source of funding for the Costume Institute’s exhibitions (and publications). And every year, the star-studded event further cements this idea that fashion is indeed art.

Back in 1948 when the first Met benefit was held for New York’s social elite, tickets were only about $100 (the equivalent of approximately $1000 today). That went up to $1000 when Anna Wintour took the reigns as chairwoman in 1995. In two-decades she has built the gala into the multi-million dollar event that it is today.

So sit back, relax and check out some of these awesome Met Gala 2019 moments. And remember, it’s all for a good cause!
