Priyanka Chopra & Nick Jonas Set Up Fundraiser for India’s COVID-19 Crisis

Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Nick Jonas are doing what they can to help the people of India as a humanitarian crisis unfolds due to the COVID-19 pandemic –  and they’re hoping their millions of fans around the world might take action and help too.

The superstar couple has teamed up with GiveIndia to organise a fundraiser for Priyanka’s home country, which has already collected more than $300,000 since going live just a few hours ago.

In a video posted on their socials, both Nick and Priyanka speak out about the rising COVID-19 numbers and how hospitals are at breaking point.

“Over the past month, we have seen the sudden rise and ravaging effects of COVID-19 as it’s blazed an unrelenting path across India,” Priyanka says.

“Even as the medics learn more about the virus, the threat continues to loom.”

She then asks her fans to contribute to the fundraiser “because unless everyone is safe, no one is safe.”

Nick also appears in the video describing the magnitude of deaths as “staggering” and confirming that all donations, no matter how big or small, will help:

“The funds raised will go to towards creating physical healthcare infrastructure, medical equipment and vaccination support.”

According to the United Nations, there are over 350,000 COVID-19 cases being reported daily in India and the total number of infections has surpassed 17 million. The death toll is over 200,000 and that number is expected to rise significantly.

Priyanka also shared a video on her Instagram pleading for support:

“Why do we need to care? Why is it so urgent right now? I’m sitting in London and hearing from my friends and family in India about how hospitals are at capacity. There are no rooms in ICUs, ambulances are too busy, oxygen supply is less, crematoriums having mass cremations because the volume of deaths is so much,” she says.

“India is my home, and India is bleeding. We as a global community need to care.”
