They laughed at it. They made fun of it. Some even called it “ugly”- but Ryan Reynolds and his iconic Christmas sweater have come out on top once again!

The Hollywood star’s most recent “Sweater Love” campaign, inspired by that sweater*, has raised over $640,000 for Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Kids and their SickKids foundation. That’s almost double the amount raised in the previous year’s campaign!

*That sweater = the red and green Christmas one Ryan donned in 2018, complete with a ridiculously huge, shiny, gold bow for an ugly sweater party with mates Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal which, much to the internet’s delight, turned out to not be an ugly sweater party at all. (Time for new friends Ryan? We’re right here. Just sayin’.)

But back to the latest sweater campaign…

It involved Ryan gifting 5,000 SickKids staff members with their own replica sweaters over the holiday season to show them some love for all the hard work they do.

Ryan also shared a short video on socials in December last year, encouraging his millions of fans to consider making a donation to support the young patients:

“Now that we’ve shown these folks some love,” he said referring to the doctors and nurses, “please help me show these little ones some too.”

A number of his famous pals got involved including Olympic sprinter Andre de Grasse and Hockey champion Hayley Wickenheiser who wore the sweater to highlight the campaign, plus Samsung Canada made a $100,000 donation to the cause.

According to a release shared with CelebrityKind, Ryan and his sweater have raised more than $1.7 million for SickKids in the three years the initiative has been running.

Time we stopped calling it the “ugly sweater” don’t ya think? That thing is 100% awesome!
