Ryan Reynolds & His Iconic Christmas Sweater are Back to Help Kids in Hospital

Ryan Reynolds is donning his iconic Christmas sweater once again for a good cause!

But hey, to fully appreciate this story, we need to rewind a little….

It was the year 2018. The Vancouver-born legend donned the red and green Christmas sweater, complete with a ridiculously huge, shiny, gold bow, for a party with mates Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal. He thought he was supposed to wear an ugly Christmas sweater. It was the theme, they said.

But alas, no. Much to the internet’s delight, it was not. He’d been pranked and was the only one who rocked up to the party in a rather outrageous outfit:

But being the legend that he is, Ryan flipped what could’ve been a very embarrassing memory into a mission for good!

Since that day, he’s used that same sweater design in annual campaigns to raise money for SickKids –  the Hospital for Sick Children which is recognised as Canada’s most research-intensive hospital.

And fast forward to today, he’s doing it all over again.

“The past couple of years, my beloved, yet aesthetically challenged holiday sweater has become a symbol for how much we all care about children and SickKids hospital,” Ryan says in a video posted to Instagram – and yes, of course he’s wearing it.

“But this year, I want to recognise the doctors and nurses too. And that means that, with all due respect to a certain iconic trio from the 90s, I do want scrubs,” he hilariously adds, referring to TLC.

The video then shows frontline workers unwrapping gift boxes to find tops in the exact same design as his holiday sweater.

Oh and if you look closely, you’ll notice Ryan gives Hugh Jackman and Deborra-lee Furness a little shoutout via his sweater too.

The video ends with Ryan urging his fans to consider making a contribution to the foundation: “Now that we’ve shown these folks some love,” he says referring to the doctors and nurses, “please help me show these little ones some too.”

According to the foundation, over 300 children will spend their holidays at SickKids.

The campaign will run until Christmas Eve and individual donations made before midnight will be matched up to $100,000 by Samsung Canada.

You can learn more about the campaign HERE.

And look, I know it’s controversial, but personally I think the sweater is rather delightful!
