Sir Elton John says he’s “heartbroken” by the bushfires ripping through Australia and is pledging $1 million to support relief efforts.
The music legend made the announcement during his concert in Sydney last night, describing the scenes as “apocalyptic.”
“You should all be in awe of the work that the firefighters are doing,” he said to the crowd. “There are people out there who have lost their lives trying to save homes, there are people who have lost their lives and their homes. And last is the plight of the animals and loss of their habitat that frankly, is on a biblical scale and heartbreaking.”
He received a standing ovation after announcing his generous donation.
The Hemsworth family have also donated a million dollars to the cause while Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban, Kylie and Dannii Minogue and Pink have donated $500,000, while Celeste Barber’s epic Facebook fundraiser has now reached over $40 million.
