Gwyneth’s doing it for her dad. Drew’s doing it for her kids. And Pink’s doing it for her daughter.
They’re all dedicating trees to people they love in support of a new environmental campaign by Stella McCartney. It’s called #thereshegrows and it’s about saving rainforests in Indonesia as well as raising awareness about the endangered Leuser Ecosystem.
What is that exactly? The Leuser Ecosystem is the 6.5 million acre forest in Sumatra, Indonesia that’s home to rhinos, tigers, elephants and the critically endangered Sumatran Orangutan. There are over 100 species of mammal, 382 bird species and over 8000 plant species. Millions of people rely on the forest for clean air and water. But right now, it’s under serious threat from logging and development. That’s why Stella wants to do something about it.
Every time someone dedicates a tree to a person they love and posts it on social media, The Stella McCartney Cares Foundation will make a donation to Canopy Planet, a non-profit organisation that works to save endangered forests around the world.
“Our planet needs us…We need it,” the environmentally-conscious fashion designer says in her Insta post. And her celebrity friends certainly agree.
They’ve been quick to jump on board and help spread the word: Gwyneth Paltrow has dedicated a tree to her dad, Bruce. Drew Barrymore has dedicated two trees to her girls, Frankie and Olive while Pink’s dedicated one to her “own little tree, Willow”.
Selma Blair, Roony Mara, Camila Alves and Jimmy Fallon have been taking part too. But it’s Kris Jenner who has, in true Kris-Jenner-style, outdone them all, making NINE dedications in total for each of her grandkids: Mason, Penelope, Reign, North, Saint, Chicago, Stormi, Dream and True!
It won’t be long before we see similar videos from Justin Timberlake, J-Lo, Leonardo Dicaprio and Ellen, who’ve all been nominated to take part.
This isn’t the first time Stella McCartney has used her platform for environmental good. She’s known for using animal-free alternatives in her collections and since 2014, her brand has been working with Canopy Planet to ensure all viscose is sourced from sustainably managed forests in Sweden.
