While being nominated for an Academy Award in the 2018 drama Roma, becoming one of Time’s most influential people in 2019 and taking on the role of UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador for Indigenous Peoples, Yalitza Aparicio Martínez has also been quietly growing her hair, to help make wigs for women and children fighting cancer.
The Mexican star spent the last six years preparing to donate her locks and shared photos of the chop on social media today. (Swipe to see the end result!)

“Strength and confidence can be shared in different ways,” she captions the photos.
“Today after almost 6 years of preparing and taking care of my hair, I fulfil my dream of donating it to support and accompany whoever needs it.”
Yalitza also encouraged her 2.1 million followers to consider doing the same:
“I invite you to join so that with your hair you accompany a woman who goes through this battle with #cabezaenalto” – or with her head up.
Interesting fact: It takes approximately 20 to 30 ponytails to make one wig!
