The 2022 Australian Open winner and Roland Garros champion shocked the world last year when she announced her retirement from professional tennis.
“I’m so grateful to everything tennis has given me. It’s given me all of my dreams plus more but I know the time is right now for me to step away and chase other dreams and to put the racquets down,” Ash said at the time.
She explained it was something she’d “been thinking about for a long time”, particularly after winning Wimbledon in 2021 and then the Australian Open.
“Success for me is knowing I’ve given absolutely everything I can. I’m fulfilled. I’m happy.”
She also revealed that she wanted to spend more time with family, doing the things she loves.
“I think it’s important I get to enjoy the next phase of my life as Ash Barty the person not Ash Barty the athlete.”
Since her retirement, Ash has written a number of children’s books about sport and friendship: “If I can help encourage new readers that will make me very happy.”
She also tied the knot with Garry in 2022, a few months after announcing her retirement.
