Australian singer Helen Reddy who was behind the worldwide feminist anthem “I Am Woman” has passed away, aged 78.
Her children, Traci and Jordan, confirmed the news with a message on an official Facebook fan page:
“She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and a truly formidable woman. Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever.”
Helen was the first Australian to top the U.S. charts and the first to win a Grammy Award.
And she gave us that phenomenal Grammy’s moment while accepting the award in 1973:
“I’d like to thank God because she makes everything possible,” she said.
She had been out of the spotlight over the last few years as she battled dementia.
A biopic about Helen’s life titled “I Am Woman” premiered last year.
