“Please, when I’m gone, always be reminded that whenever you stand for your truth, you will be keeping my voice and the voices of our nations and our people alive. I remain Sacheen Littlefeather.”
Activist and actor Sacheen Littlefeather has passed away, aged 75.
The Academy has announced the sad news on social media – Littlefeather recently received and accepted a formal apology from them for her treatment at the 1973 Oscars and the years of backlash she endured. At the time, she declined an award on Marlon Brando’s behalf and at his request, used the moment to highlight the mistreatment of Native Americans. She was booed at the podium for making a political statement and was essentially excluded from the industry.
Littlefeather went on to continue her activism as well as work in theatre and healthcare. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she had breast cancer.
The quote above shares Littlefeather’s own words after accepting the apology.
Condolences to all who knew, loved and were inspired by her.
