Soccer Legend & Humanitarian Pelé Has Passed Away

The world has lost an icon.

Pelé (Edson Arantes do Nascimento), a 3-time World Cup champion widely recognised as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, has peacefully passed away at the age of 82.

His daughter Kely confirmed the sad news on social media: “All that we are is thanks to you. We love you forever. Rest in peace.”

Pelé’s official Instagram page has also been updated:

“Inspiration and love marked the journey of King Pelé, who peacefully passed away today. On his journey, Edson enchanted the world with his genius in sport, stopped a war, carried out social works all over the world and spread what he most believed to be the cure for all our problems: love. His message today becomes a legacy for future generations.
Love, love and love, forever.”

Pelé had been in and out of hospital this past year with colon cancer. In November it was announced that the cancer had advanced and he would be placed in palliative care.

Condolences to all who knew and loved him, to the people of Brazil who so openly adored him with their whole hearts and to the millions around the world who watched on, inspired by his greatness.

A huge loss to the world.
