The Comedy World Remembers Norm Macdonald, The One Who Made Them Laugh The Most

The world of comedy is remembering one of the most influential people among them – Norm Macdonald, who has passed away at the age of 61.

The beloved Saturday Night Live star and writer had been privately battling cancer for nearly a decade, as per a statement made by his team to Deadline.

And as messages of love pour in for him across the social media world, one thing is clear – Norm was the comedian other comedians couldn’t get enough of. He was the one who made them laugh. He was the one who inspired them:

“I was a huge fan of Norm Macdonald and I essentially ripped off his delivery when I first started acting,” Seth Rogen posted on Twitter.

“I would stay up specifically to watch him on talk shows. He was the funniest guest of all time. We lost a comedy giant today. One of the all time greats.”

Actor and comedian Steve Martin wrote in a tweet that he was “one of a kind,” while fellow comedian Patton Oswalt said he was “never not 100% hilarious” and talk show host David Letterman described him as the best, “in every important way, in the world of stand-up.”

Fellow TV personality Conan O’Brien says Norm had “the most unique comedic voice” and was “so relentlessly and uncompromisingly funny.”

He adds, “I will never laugh that hard again. I’m so sad for all of us today.”

Comedian and actress Molly Shannon remembers him as being both funny and “unmistakably intelligent.”

Writer Seth MacFarlane says like so many others, he couldn’t get enough of Norm:

“To so many people in comedy, me included, there was nobody funnier than Norm Macdonald.  You always hoped he would hang around after the work was done, just so you could hear his stories and get a laugh. So hilarious and so generous with his personality.”

Actor and comedian Jim Carrey described him as “one of our most precious gems. An honest and courageous comedy genius.”

And Adam Sandler says it was Norm who provided “some of the hardest laughs ” of his life.

“Most fearless funny original guy we knew. An incredible dad. A great friend. A legend. Love u pal.”

And finally, a message from the team at Saturday Night Live who summed up how the comedy world is feeling about his immense loss:

“All of us here at SNL mourn the loss of Norm Macdonald, one of the most impactful comedic voices of his or any other generation. There are so many things we’ll miss about Norm – from his unflinching integrity to his generosity to his consistent ability to surprise. But most of all he was just plain funny. No one was funny like Norm.”
