JAY-Z has made his long-awaited return to Instagram – and his first (and currently, only) post is promoting his upcoming film, The Book of Clarence.
The hip-hop mogul who is serving as executive producer and will be contributing music to the Biblical epic, shared the movie’s dramatic 2-minute trailer to his page. Directed by The Harder They Fall’s Jeymes Samuel, the film stars LaKeith Stanfield as Clarence with Benedict Cumberbatch, James McAvoy, Omar Cy, David Oyelowo, Teyana Taylor and more.
The trailer opens with Clarence and Elijah in Jerusalem in AD 33, looking at the masses of people turning to Jesus of Nazareth for healing.
“I want to be like that in 10 years,” Elijah tells Clarence.
“I want to be like that now,” Clarence responds, before the clip cuts to another scene of him with his arms wide open, declaring “God sent me to deliver this message: I am your new messiah!”
Clarence is later asked to walk on water as his divine powers are questioned. He’s about to take a step and then – nothing, the trailer dramatically ends!

In an interview with Vanity Fair earlier this month, Samuel explained that he wanted to share a Bible story from a different angle, such as “the person that sells Jesus his sandals, the woman or man that owns the hair salon.”
In the same article, JAY-Z praised Samuel with “finding fresh ways and perspectives to talk about these stories” by giving a platform to Black characters:
“Most of the stories told in the Old West didn’t include people of colour. We know they existed. We know we’ve been here just as long as anyone else.”
Interestingly, JAY-Z isn’t really one for social media so having him return to the platform is kind of a big deal. However, it’s not clear how long he’ll stay connected. You might remember two years ago, he joined for a similar reason – to share the trailer for The Harder We Fall – and then shut down his account after one day.
He’s currently following just one account on his page and that’s Beyoncé, of course.
The Book of Clarence is due out in cinemas on January 12, 2024.
