New ‘Hunger Games’ Prequel is in the Works!

It’s a huge day for fans of The Hunger Games – not only is there a new book on the way from author Suzanne Collins, but we’ve also learned a movie is coming too!

Collins along with publisher Scholastic just announced a fifth book in her hugely popular series, titled Sunrise on the Reaping. It will be released on March 18, 2025.

And shortly after, Lionsgate announced it would be adapting the book for the big screen with a theatrical release date of November 20, 2026!

So what’s the prequel going to be about? Well, the story is set 24 years before The Hunger Games, when the Second Quarter Quell takes place and Haymitch Abernathy is the victor. The character has been played by Woody Harrelson in the Hunger Games films already released and there’s no word yet on who will be cast as a young Abernathy. We do know Francis Lawrence, who has worked on all The Hunger Games movies, will be returning as director.

Lionsgate Chair Adam Fogelson says, “Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. We know Hunger Games fans worldwide will be spellbound by where Suzanne has focused this next extraordinary story. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later. Like fans around the globe, we are eagerly anticipating this exciting return to Panem.”

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping film follows the epic success of 2023’s The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes starring Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth and Hunter Schafer.

The new book from Collins and the film come as a welcome surprise for fans who thought The Hunger Games universe ended with Mockingjay in 2010. But then Collins returned with The Ballad of Songbirds prequel. And now another one?

Yep, we’re definitely here for it!
