Dwayne Johnson Announces Release Date For Live-Action ‘Moana’

The live-action Moana film now has an official release date!

Lock it in your diaries friends, it will hit the big screen on June 27,2025. (What can I say except… you’re welcome!)

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, who will portray demi-god Maui in the film, announced the news in a post on Instagram today:

“‘Sometimes our strengths lie beneath the surface. Far beneath in some cases’ – Moana,” he wrote, adding he is “humbled (and excited!)” to share the release date. “It’s my privilege to share our legends, songs and dance of our Polynesian culture with all of you and your families.”

Along with his words, he posted a photo fo a Hawaiian island, set to “Tulou Tagaloa” by Olivia Foa’i which featured on the original Moana soundtrack.

A live-action remake of the beloved children’s animation was announced by Dwayne in April this year. He voiced demi-god Maui in the original:

“I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of ‘Moana’ to the live-action big screen,” he shared in a video posted to Instagram at the time.

“This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace, mana and warrior strength.”

“I wear our culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once in a lifetime opportunity to reunite with MAUI, inspired by the spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, is one that runs very deep for me.”

Last month, Auli’i Cravalho who so beautifully voiced Moana in the 2016 animated film, announced she would not be reprising her role for the remake:

“When I was cast as Moana at 14, it wonderfully changed my life and started my career,” the now 22-year-old explained.

“In this live-action retelling, I will not be reprising the role. I believe it is absolutely vital that casting accurately represents the characters and stories we want to tell. So as an executive producer on the film, I cannot wait to help find the next actress to portray Moana’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength.”

Auli’i continued: “I’m truly honoured to pass the baton to the next woman of Pacific Island descent to honour our incredible Pacific people, cultures and communities that help inspire her story, and I look forward to all the beautiful Pacific representation to come. Mahalo.”

No word yet on who will play Moana.
