Ryan, Hugh & Shawn Hope ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Delivers “Unbridled Joy”

Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman and Shawn Levy have kicked off the Deadpool & Wolverine press tour, and it’s all about the ‘F’ word. No, not that one…

Friendship!

Yes, the famous besties are currently in Berlin, after stopping by Amsterdam, Seoul and Shanghai, where they’ve not only been discussing what we can expect from the film (we’re in for a treat people), but how their friendship impacts what we see on screen.

“I’ve never been more proud of a film in my entire life than the one I’ve got here, and that I get to do with two of my closest friends,” Ryan said at a press conference in Seoul.

“The three of us, when we set out to make this film, we had a very specific North Star and that was to deliver unbridled joy and audacity to audiences. I personally have found, and I know it’s your experience (Hugh), and Shawn’s experience, the best and most powerful magic in all of storytelling in the modern day and age, particularly the last five to ten years, has been joy. And that’s what we did here. That’s the only objective. To create as much joy as humanly possible.”

The actor, who is reprising his role as Wade Wilson/Deadpool in the third instalment of the film, says it’s their epic real-life friendships that creates such joy on screen.

“I think it reads on camera because for us, it’s a dream come true for us all to work together… we’ve been through all kinds of ups and down, we’ve been there for each other,” Ryan continued. “We genuinely love each other. And we cheer for each other and I think that’s why it translates to the screen, that kind of enthusiasm and joy because you have these folks who are not competing with one another. Each one of us really wants to put the other ahead and put them in the best possible light.”

Ryan and Hugh have known each other for 17 years, having met on the set of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. And Ryan has been friends with Shawn for over a decade after being introduced to him by… you guessed it, Hugh! Prior to Deadpool & Wolverine, they worked together on The Adam Project and Free Guy.

Going by this press tour, their friendships only seem to be growing stronger. The guys have been uploading pics of their trip on socials and what a ride! From attending a Euro 2024 match in Berlin together to wearing traditional Korean dress, and stopping by the WaterBOMB festival in Seoul (Blake Lively hilariously posted about it on her Insta stories, writing “when he tells you he’s going to work and then you see him on MTV Spring Break”) – yeah they’re certainly having a blast!

Speaking at the press conference too, Shawn took a moment to praise Ryan and Hugh, not only for their immense talent, but also for being such decent blokes:

“These two are the biggest movie stars in the world. They are such authentic, warm human beings… two guys who are really, heroes in real-life, and good, kind human beings.”

Hugh also shared his thoughts on how their friendship means they can give audiences the best of themselves onscreen:

“I say this on behalf of all three of us. No one expects more of us, than us ourselves. That’s one thing we have in common. And as someone who has played a character for 25 years, this is my 10th film playing Wolverine, I know that these two as writers and producers had so much of their heart and soul poured into making sure that this was the version of Wolverine that was the best yet. When I read the script, when I read everything and what I felt on set was, I’d never felt someone care as much about my character as me before, than I do with these two.”

Actor Emma Corrin has now joined the trio on the German leg of the tour.
