Viola Davis to Play Villain in ‘The Hunger Games’ Prequel

Viola Davis has joined the cast of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.

The Oscar, Emmy and Tony award-winning actress will play Head Gamemaker and villain Dr. Volumnia Gaul in the upcoming prequel.

“Glad to be a part of this universe,” Viola shared on Twitter, confirming her involvement.

She will star alongside Rachel Zegler, Tom Blyth, Peter Dinklage, Hunter Schafer and Andrés Rivera.

According to a synopsis from Lionsgate, the prequel will focus on 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow (played by Blyth) who “is the last hope for his fading lineage, a once-proud family that has fallen from grace in a post-war Capitol. With the 10th annual Hunger Games fast approaching, the young Snow is alarmed when he is assigned to mentor Lucy Gray Baird (played by Zegler), the girl from impoverished District 12. But, after Lucy Gray commands all of Panem’s attention by defiantly singing during the reaping ceremony, Snow thinks he might be able to turn the odds in their favour. Uniting their instincts for showmanship and newfound political savvy, Snow and Lucy’s race against time to survive will ultimately reveal who is a songbird and a snake.”

The film is expected to be released in November 2023.
