Shakira holds a new YouTube record!
The superstar’s latest song “BZRP Music Sessions #53”, a collaboration with Argentine artist Bizarrap, had an estimated 50 million views in its first 24 hours, making it the biggest debut for a Latin song in YouTube history.
The song is widely understood to be about her ex, soccer star Gerard Piqué and his current girlfriend Clara Chia Marti. In the track, Shakira sings “I’m worth two 22-year-olds” and “I’m out of your league” among other powerful lyrics about knowing her own value. At one point she says she has “No hard feelings baby/ I wish you the best with my so-called replacement.”
The song easily surpassed the previous record held by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee for their “Despacito” collaboration which reached 25 million views in its first 24 hours of release.
In a recent tweet, Shakira shared her gratitude after learning the song had also topped global Spotify charts:
“Thanks to the incredible @bizarrap, @SonyMusicLatina and my wonderful team and group of warrior women who walk by my side. This goes out to all the women who taught me that when life throws you bitter lemons, there’s no other choice but to make lemonade.”
