It’s a tale as old as time: woman is brilliant and successful, someone tries to discredit her. But Taylor Swift isn’t having a bar of it.
The singer has powerfully responded to Blur and Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn who claimed in a recent LA Times interview that she “doesn’t write her own songs.”
When the interviewer insisted she does and explained that at times she may co-write her music, Damon replied, “that doesn’t count. I know what co-writing is. Co-writing is very different to writing. I’m not hating on anybody. I’m just saying there’s a big difference between a songwriter and a songwriter who co-writes.”
He goes on to explain how he digs Billie Eilish’s “more minor and odd” music and to be honest, it sounds like he’s just not a fan of TayTay’s “upbeat” style. (You can read his full interview here.)
Now I could sit here and list all the songs Taylor has solo-written – “Love Story”, “Fifteen”, “Begin Again”, “Red”, and literally all 17 songs from her “Speak Now” album, just to name a few – but let’s get straight to that powerful response of hers…
In a post on Twitter, Taylor writes:
“@DamonAlbarn I was such a big fan of yours until I saw this. I write ALL of my own songs. Your hot take is completely false and SO damaging. You don’t have to like my songs but it’s really f***ed up to try and discredit my writing. WOW.”
In a follow-up Tweet, she adds: “PS I wrote this tweet all by myself in case you were wondering.”
She was also backed up by Jack Antanoff who has produced a number of Taylor’s songs and albums:
“I’ve never met Damon Albarn and he’s never been to my studio but apparently he knows more than the rest of us about all those songs Taylor writes and brings in.”
He threw in a few F-words too. You can read his full Tweet here.

Damon has since apologised “unreservedly and unconditionally” to Taylor saying “the last thing I would want to do is discredit your songwriting.”
In his apology tweet, he writes: “I had a conversation about songwriting and sadly it was reduced to clickbait.”
Make of that what you will…
But for now, we’ll be pumping “Love Story” over here, one of the greatest solo-written tracks by *checks notes* Taylor Swift!
