Tongan Olympian Pita Taufatofua is using his platform to support his home country, after a recent volcanic eruption and tsunami devastated the region.
The taekwondo athlete and cross-country skier who is currently training in Australia, has started a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds for relief efforts – and so far he’s raised almost $500,000.
In a message shared on his GoFundMe page he explains, “initial priority for the funds will go towards those most in need” as well as repairs of infrastructure, schools and hospitals.
“We are seeking your donations to help our island Kingdom,” he adds.

He’s also a UNICEF Ambassador and has been working with the humanitarian organisation and the Australian government to send much-needed supplies of water and hygiene kits to the country.
