America Ferrera Appointed IOM Global Goodwill Ambassador

Trailblazing Hollywood star and social activist America Ferrera has a new gig – she’s been named the new Global Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

America will be using her platform to highlight a number of issues including migration and women’s rights, and to amplify underrepresented voices. She says she’s honoured to be entrusted with such a position:

“I’m so excited for the opportunity to continue amplifying stories that move us towards better and safer solutions for global migration,” she said in a press release.

“The issue of migration has always been so close to my heart. As an advocate, I’ve spent years listening and learning about the experiences and struggles of migrants, and I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the great value they have to contribute as they pursue happy and healthy lives for themselves and their families. This issue means a great deal to me personally as I am the daughter of Honduran immigrants to the U.S. and my story is a migration story.”

And what a story it is. America has been gracing our screens for decades – from Ugly Betty, to Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and the history-making Barbie film. This year, she became the first person of Honduran decent to be nominated for an Oscar in any category. She is an Emmy winner, a Golden Globe winner and a SAG Award winner. She is a director, a producer and the co-founder of Poderistas, a platform elevating Latina voices. She has consistently used her platform to discuss pay inequality, diversity in entertainment, women’s health issues, and she most recently signed the Artists4Ceasefire petition calling for the safe release of hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza.

“IOM is delighted to welcome America Ferrera as our Global Goodwill Ambassador,” IOM Director General Amy Pope said.

“Her dedication to migrant issues, especially those affecting women, is truly inspiring. We look forward to working together to raise awareness of the benefits and opportunities of migration, for women and the millions of people on the move worldwide. ”
